DONNA FREIREICH, of counsel
Donna Freireich was General Counsel and Deputy Superintendent of the New York Insurance Department from 1993-95. She was a member of the Insurance Practice Group at Stroock & Stroock & Lavan from 1995 to 1998, when she opened a solo practice specializing in insurance and energy law. Ms. Freireich joined Wasser & Russ in June 2006.
Prior to her service at the Insurance Department, Ms. Freireich directed two temporary state commissions on workers’ compensation (1984-86 and 1991-93). From 1987 to 1990, she served as First Deputy Auditor General of the City of New York. Previously, she had worked in the Utility Intervention Office of the New York State Consumer Protection Board, litigating on behalf of consumers and small businesses in electric, gas and telephone proceedings before the Public Service Commission. She is the co-author of an award-winning article, “Nuclear Cancellations: Economic and Legal Bases for Allocating Costs,” published by the Institute of Public Utilities in Award Papers in Public Utility Economics and Regulation (1982).
Ms. Freireich currently specializes in insurance and reinsurance regulatory, transactional and litigation matters. She was admitted to the New York Bar and the New York Federal Court’s Southern and Eastern Districts in 1978. Ms. Freireich received her B.A. in history from the University of Rochester in 1971 and her J.D. from Washington University in St. Louis in 1977.
